Welcome to the official web site of the Wee Can Fight Obesity program! Obesity in America has become an alarming problem not only in adults, but now in our children. The Wee Can Fight Obesity program is trying to change that by finding creative ways to encourage our children to be more active. Healthy exercise and activity will hopefully help our generation of children to live stronger, healthier lives.

The ASF Foundation, in conjunction with the Alabama State Department of Education, Alabama State University, and the Governor’s Commission on Physical Fitness, developed the program, which is administered by the ASF Foundation. This program provides a unique electronic, animated exercise program in PE classes to promote health, physical activity, and educational awareness.

Its primary objective is to instill healthy lifestyle habits that will hopefully last a lifetime, significantly reduce obesity risk factors and enhance interest in personal health, movement related activities and sports. Thirty-two elementary schools have served as a pilot for this program within the last year.  The ASF Foundation has thus far invested over $800,000 in providing Wee Can Fight ObesitySM systems and professional assistance to 243 schools and 38 Senior Centers participating in the program. Principals and PE teachers alike are realizing tremendous benefits from this fun program which also enhances their efforts to emphasize the need for physical fitness in school and to join in the fight to reduce obesity in Alabama, particularly childhood obesity.

History

Statistics have shown that Alabama currently ranks at the top among states in America with high incidents of obesity in children according to various studies. During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. In 2008, only one state had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%.  Six states, including Alabama, had a prevalence rate equal or greater than 30%.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Wee Can Fight Obesity initiative is to empower students and educators with the tools and resources to engage students in quality movement experiences through the use of technology based interactive game activities.
